NEW PROJECT
Seenaryo’s first project in Gaza

We have been able to reach children in Gaza through play for the first time, thanks to a project we have launched in partnership with A. M. Qattan Foundation.

Over the next two years, Seenaryo trainers will meet weekly with early years teachers in Gaza, equipping them with tools that integrate psychosocial support and play-based learning into temporary learning spaces across five areas of Gaza: Gaza City, Khan Younis, Deir al Balah, Al Bureij, and Al Nuseirat.

A recent War Child study of 500 children and caregivers in Gaza showed the catastrophic psychological trauma inflicted by Israel’s relentless bombing, reporting that 96% of children feel death is imminent, 79% suffer from nightmares, 73% of children exhibit symptoms of aggression, and 49% of children wish to die because of the war. On top of this, children in Gaza have lost two years of schooling, and 90% of school buildings are damaged or destroyed, with temporary learning centres becoming the primary spaces for education.

Designed in close consultation with teachers in Gaza, the project is focussed on training and mentoring to support children’s mental health and psychosocial learning. The programme combines curriculum themes for 4-8 year olds (e.g. transport, jobs) with social-emotional learning (e.g. grief, resilience). It is being delivered through a cascade model where Seenaryo trainers train coaches in Gaza via Zoom, who in turn coach and mentor teachers in person to deliver the sessions directly to children.

Throughout the project, we aim to reach 120 teachers and 5,400 children in Gaza.

At a time when the right to education is under such severe threat, ensuring that children in Gaza not only have safe spaces to play, but also meaningful access to learning is essential for their recovery and their long-term future.
